Sanja holds a PhD in Medical Microbiology and Immunology from the University of Turku, Finland. Her doctoral research focused on the microbial and immunological characteristics of acute appendicitis, including the role of appendicoliths and the appendiceal microbiome.
Her postdoctoral project in the Björn Schröder Lab investigates the mucus function and gut microbiota in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). By combining human patient samples with mechanistic mouse experiments, this study aims to improve the understanding of the microbiota-mucus interaction in IBD.
